Kisbánya Monastery

Chiuzbaia (Kisbánya in Hungarian) is a remote community nested in the middle of the mountains, part of the town of Baia Sprie (Felsőbánya), Maramureș, Northern Romania. It has around 650 inhabitants and its name “Chiuz-baia” comes from the Hungarian “kis” (“little”) or “kőzép” (“in the middle”, that is, between hills) + “bánya” (“mine”), as opposed to Baia Mare (Nagybánya, the “big mine”) and Baia Sprie (Felsőbánya, the “upper mine”). Below are some images from the garden of Chiuzbaia Monastery (Mănăstirea Chiuzbaia in Romanian), built even farther to the north, at the end of a rather challenging forestry road. It was built in 1995 and it’s an Orthodox, monk (men) monastery.
