A Zen Buddhist monk is fleeing from a hungry tiger.
The monk comes to the edge of a cliff, cutting off any hope of escape from the pursuing tiger. Fortunately for the monk, a vine happens to be growing over the edge. He grabs hold of it and begins to climb down the cliff, out of the tiger’s reach, who is by now glaring at him from above.
But alas, as the monk is climbing down, he spies another tiger waiting for him below, circling impatiently at the bottom of the cliff. To make matters worse, out of the corner of his eye he notices a mouse on a ledge above him already beginning to chew through the vine. Then, out of the corner of his other eye, the monk sees a strawberry growing from the rock.
So he picks the strawberry and eats it.

Un moine bouddhiste zen fuit un tigre affamé.
Le moine arrive au bord d’une falaise, coupant tout espoir d’évasion au tigre qui le poursuit. Heureusement pour le moine, une vigne pousse par-dessus le bord. Il l’attrape et commence à descendre la falaise, hors de portée du tigre, qui le regarde maintenant d’en haut.
Mais hélas, alors que le moine descend, il aperçoit un autre tigre qui l’attend en bas, faisant des ronds avec impatience au bas de la falaise. Pour aggraver les choses, du coin de l’œil, il remarque une souris sur un rebord au-dessus de lui qui commence déjà à ronger la vigne. Puis, du coin de son autre œil, le moine aperçoit une fraise poussant sur le rocher.
Alors il cueille la fraise et la mange.

Ein Mann, der über eine Ebene reiste, stieß auf einen Tiger. Er floh, den Tiger hinter sich.
Als er an einen Abgrund kam, suchte er Halt an der Wurzel eines wilden Weinstocks und schwang sich über die Kante. Der Tiger beschnupperte ihn von oben.
Zitternd schaute der Mann hinab, wo weit unten ein anderer Tiger darauf wartete, ihn zu fressen. Nur der Wein hielt ihn.
Zwei Mäuse, machten sich daran, nach und nach die Weinwurzel durchzubeißen.
Der Mann sah eine saftige Erdbeere neben sich.
Während er sich mit der einen Hand am Wein festhielt, pflückte er mit der anderen die Erdebeere.
Wie süß sie schmeckte!
